When did Dag Hammarskjöld say: "It has been said that the United Nations was not created in order to bring us to heaven, but in order to save us from hell"?

This statement is found at the end of press release SG/382, "Address by Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjöld at University of California Convocation, Berkeley, California, Thursday, May 13, 1954, at 10:00 a.m. (Pacific Coast Time)".

The original quote is sometimes attributed to Henry Cabot Lodge, Jr. In his memoir, The Storm Has Many Eyes, Lodge says, "Churchill ... said that the UN was not designed to take us to heaven, but to prevent us from going to hell" (p. 185). The UN Library has not found a source for the Churchill quote.
