How many African countries are members of the United Nations?

According to the United Nations Department for General Assembly and Conference Management, 54 countries belong to the African Group and are Members of the United Nations.

The Rules of Procedure of the General Assembly (A/520/Rev.18 in Annex IV, page 81) provides information on the election of the chairmen of the regional groups.
