Which major conferences on women has the United Nations organized?

The United Nations has organized four major conferences on women:

  • 1st, 1975: The World Conference of the International Women's Year was held in Mexico City on 19 June-2 July 1975. The report is issued as document E/CONF.66/34.

  • 2nd, 1980: The World Conference of the United Nations Decade for Women: Equality, Development and Peace was held in Copenhagen on 14-30 July 1980. The report is issued as document A/CONF.94/35.

  • 3rd, 1985: The World Conference to Review and Appraise the Achievements of the United Nations Decade for Women: Equality, Development and Peace was held on 15-26 June 1985 in Nairobi. The report is issued as document A/CONF.116/28/Rev.1.

  • 4th, 1995: The World Conference on Women: Action for Equality, Development and Peace was held in Beijing on 4-15 Sept. 1995. The report is issued as document:  A/CONF.177/20/Rev.1.


Since the Beijing conference in 1995, the General Assembly and the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) have held several sessions to review the implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action.

  • 2000: The Five-year Review of the implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action (Beijing+5) held in the General Assembly, 5 - 9 June 2000. The outcome document entitled “Women 2000: Gender Equality, Development and Peace in the Twenty-first Century” was issued in document A/55/341.
  • 2005 : The Ten-year Review and Appraisal of the implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action and the outcome of the twenty-third special session of the General Assembly (2000) was held during the 49th session of the CSW from 28 February to 11 March 2005. The outcome report is issued in document: E/CN.6/2005/11.
  • 2010: The 15-year Review of the implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action (1995) and the outcomes of the twenty-third special session of the General Assembly (2000) was held from 1-12 March 2010, during the 54th session of the CSW. The outcome document was issued in E/2010/27.
  • 2015: The 59th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW59), which took place at in New York from 9 to 20 March 2015, marked the Beijing+20. The Political Declaration adopted on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women is issued in E/2015/2
  • 2020: The 64th session of CSW took place in March 2020 and included the 25-year Review and appraisal of the Beijing Platform for Action. The Political Declaration adopted is issued in E/2020/27
