The withdrawal of Cuba and Colombia is mentioned in the document A/34/PV.120 (7 January 1980).  Para 6: “…Yesterday, at noon, the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Cuba informed me of his Government’s decision to withdraw from the election.  I am happy to report that I have now been officially informed by the Chairman of the Group of Latin American States that the group this morning formally endorsed the candidature of Mexico, subsequent to the decision of the Governments of Cuba and Colombia to withdraw.  There is therefore only one candidate to fill the one remaining non-permanent seat in the Security Council and that is Mexico…”

Other discussions in the plenary on elections are available under the symbol:  A/34/PV***
