The United Nations Executive Committee of the Programme of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees was established by the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) resolution 672 (XXV) of 30 April 1958 pursuant to a request by the General Assembly in resolution A/RES/1166 (XII) of 26 November 1957.

It replaced the Executive Committee of the United Nations Refugee Fund (1954-1959).

Although established by ECOSOC, the Executive Committee functions as a subsidiary organ of the General Assembly.

Press releases pertaining to the Executive Committee are issued under series symbol REF/-.
