The International Children's Emergency Fund was established by A/RES/57 (I) of 11 Dec. 1946. In operative para. 3 the resolution establishes an Executive Board and outlines its terms of reference and initial membership.

The mandate of the International Children's Emergency Fund was expanded by A/RES/417 (V) of 1 December 1950.

The International Children's Emergency Fund was renamed United Nations Children's Fund and its mandate was further expanded by A/RES/802 (VIII) of 6 Oct. 1953.
