The Economic Commission for Asia and the Far East was established by E/RES/37(IV) of 28 March 1947. It was renamed the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) by E/RES/1895(LVII) of 1 August 1974.

Documents of the Commission are issued under series symbol E/ESCAP/-. 

Press releases pertaining to the Regional Commissions are issued under series symbol REC/- (formerly ESCAP/-).
