How was the United Nations established?

The Charter of the United Nations was signed on 26 June 1945, in San Francisco, at the conclusion of the United Nations Conference on International Organization, and came into force on 24 October 1945.

There were 51 original members of the UN.

The Audiovisual Library of International Law has a scholarly procedural history on the drafting of the Charter of the United Nations. Commentaries on the UN Charter often have a good introduction to the drafting of the Charter as well.

Documents of the San Francisco Conference have been digitized by HeinOnline, an online subscription database provider available at UN headquarters and at many research libraries. There are two indexes to this multivolume set, one of which is organized by article of the Charter, listing documents of the conference that relate to each article.
