Is an advance unedited version considered an official UN document or publication?

Normally, advance, unedited versions are later published in official versions.  UN documents will be published formally with a UN masthead on the Official Document System (ODS).  UN sales publications are also sometimes issued in advance, unedited versions before they are properly published with a UN sales number.

Unfortunately, there are no hard and fast rules on this.  Some advance, unedited versions may never get formally published.  In all cases, when referencing advance unedited versions of UN documents and publications, it is advisable to clearly indicate this when referencing them in footnotes and lists of references in academic papers or publications, in accordance with standard style manuals.
